Russia carries out massive drone attacks on Odesa and capital Kyiv

Moscow/Kyiv: Russia has retaliated strongly to the drone attacks on the capital Moscow. On Tuesday night, major drone attacks were carried out on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and Odesa province. The attacks targeted the river port of Izmail in Odesa province. Russia has been repeatedly targeting Odesa over the past two weeks, and the attack on Tuesday night is said to have happened close to the Romanian border. Meanwhile, Ukraine claims Russian troops have withdrawn from parts of Donetsk province.

Describing these attacks on Ukraine as terrorist acts, Russia had warned to retaliate strongly. Tuesday night’s drone attacks on the capital Kyiv and Odesa province are believed to be a part of this action. Russia is said to have used more than 20 suicide drones for these attacks.

Last month, Russia announced its withdrawal from the ‘Grain Deal’. Western countries, along with Ukraine, strongly criticized Russia’s decision. However, President Vladimir Putin alleged that only Ukraine and European countries took advantage of this agreement and have not followed the promises made to Russia. Despite Russia’s withdrawal, Ukraine had announced to continue exporting grain. For this, Ukraine started using the port built on the Danube River in Odesa. Thus, Russia attacked this port.

The Izmail port on the Danube River in the Odessa province was targeted on Tuesday night. The seaport of Reni, close to the border with Romania, was also targeted earlier. This port is a ‘river port’ built on the Danube River and is considered the centre of trade with Ukraine and Europe. The attack on Reni is the largest carried out close to the border of a NATO member state. After this, Russia warned Ukraine and NATO again by targeting the river port on the edge of Romania.

Furthermore, Odesa is the main port of Ukraine and has become an important centre for trade and defence. Odesa is a base for attacks on Crimea and areas adjacent to the ones occupied by Russia. Most of Ukraine’s grain exports go through Odesa and two nearby ports. For this reason, Russia has started continuous missile and drone attacks on Odesa for the last few days. Russia carried out missile and drone attacks on 25 targets in Odesa a few days back.

Meanwhile, the attack on Tuesday night destroyed two buildings and the port’s infrastructure, and casualties were reported. Ukraine has also claimed to have destroyed all Russian attack drones.
