Niger military urged Russia’s Wagner Group to help thwart intervention from African & Western countries

Niamey/Moscow – West African countries have warned of military action against Niger after the period for the restoration of democratic rule in the country ends on Sunday. Also, the French army has refused to leave the base in Niger, and the US has stopped aid to Niger. Against this background, the possibility of African and Western countries attacking Niger has increased. Considering this, it has come to the fore that Niger’s military has sought help from the Russian Wagner Group.

Western media, such as France 24 and Associated Press, have published reports. Last week, senior Niger military officers visited Mali. Senior officer General Salifou Modi met the Wagner Group officials in Mali during this time. Moreover, sources in Mali and France have confirmed that General Modi is said to have demanded the Wagner Group deploy itself in Niger during the discussion.

A few weeks ago, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, had launched an armed rebellion in Russia. After this rebellion, there were reports of hundreds of Wagner Group soldiers reaching Africa. The Wagner Group troops are largely stationed in Mali and the Central African Republic. The Russian mercenary military company has also set up bases in these countries. Apart from this, the Wagner Group is also said to have a presence in Sudan, Kenya, Mozambique, Burkina Faso and Cameroon. After the Niger coup, Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, also praised the army in a statement.

Considering this background, analysts claim that the Wagner Group can deploy itself in Niger. In addition, analysts say that the deployment of the Wagner Group will act as a security cover for the Niger military regime. Earlier, teams of the Wagner Group stationed in Mali and the Central African Republic are said to have carried out various operations. The French army had to retreat after the Wagner Group deployment in Mali.

Furthermore, the United States and European countries have included the Wagner Group in the list of terrorist groups, and strict sanctions are also being imposed against this group.
