Chinese Communist Party’s obsession with viruses putting world at risk: Former US Secretary of State Pompeo

Washington/Beijing: Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has accused the Chinese government, as he said, ‘China’s communist regime is obsessed with viruses. Chinese researchers have discovered a whopping 2,000 new viruses in a little over a decade. It took the past 200 years for the rest of the world to discover that many. More troubling is the party’s negligence on biosafety as its researchers try to discover new viruses, which is putting the entire world at risk.’

Former US President Donald Trump had consistently alleged that the coronavirus pandemic originated in China and warned that it would have to pay a heavy price for it. Other key leaders and officials in the Trump administration had also claimed that the coronavirus originated in China and that the United States had information on it. Just last month, as the World Health Organization (WHO) team, had arrived in China for an investigation, the United States revealed crucial information about the coronavirus.

Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a startling revelation in a statement. ‘The Wuhan Institute of Virology in China has ties to the Chinese military. In 2019, researchers at the lab were conducting experiments on coronaviruses associated with bats. The genetic sequence of the virus is over 96% identical to the current pandemic coronavirus. Some researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology had also fallen ill in 2019 and shown symptoms similar to those of current coronavirus patients,’ Pompeo said.

After the change of guard, President Biden and his administration have not taken a forceful stance on the matter. Even after the World Health Organization let China off the hook on the coronavirus issue, apart from showing its displeasure, the Biden administration has not hinted at any action against it. Therefore, former Secretary of State Pompeo’s allegations against China over the coronavirus pandemic are noteworthy. In his allegations against China, Pompeo has also cited an article by Yuan Zhiming, a former vice director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

In an article he wrote in 2019, Ziming had stated that ‘Many biological laboratories are being set up in China. Urgent measures need to be taken to manage biological safety in the laboratories. The research of viruses, carried out in the laboratories, could lead to a major catastrophe.’ Andreas Fulda, a British expert, also warned that a virus escaping a Chinese laboratory was not uncommon. Fulda went on to underscore that the SARS virus had leaked from a Chinese laboratory in 2004.

The former US Secretary of State has accused the Chinese government’s efforts towards discovering new viruses and its inaction towards biosafety, for which the world is paying a heavy price. At the same time, Pompeo warned that we could not allow the continuance of such an attitude in the future.
