Moscow: Russia’s foreign minister has issued a sensational warning that elements trying to spark off a new war in the Donbass region may destroy Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also accused the West of provoking Ukraine for a new conflict. Only last week, four Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in clashes in Donbass, the army informed. On the other hand, Western media claimed that there was a significant buildup of Russian troops in eastern Ukraine, citing the reason as military exercises. In the wake of the events, the direct warning of the Russian Foreign Minister assumes much significance.
Just last week, US President Joe Biden had warned Russia over the Ukraine issue. “In 2014, Russia had seized Crimea, which is a part of Ukraine. The United States will never recognize it. The United States will stand firmly behind our ally, Ukraine,” Biden said. The US Department of Defense has since issued the highest alert to the US European Command (EUCOM), claiming Russian forces had stepped up their presence near Europe and Ukraine.
Therefore, the Russian Foreign Minister has hinted at not backing out as it issued a forceful warning. “Various stories and claims are being published in the media. The concerned army is well aware of the possible consequences if they instigate a war in Donbass. I hope that the political leaders will not force the army to start a conflict. The United States and its allies are provoking political leaders in Ukraine. Those who are trying to instigate a war in the Donbass should bear in mind that such actions would lead to the destruction of Ukraine,” Lavrov warned.
Russia is preparing for a military exercise near Ukraine. For that purpose, there a significant Russian military buildup in the region, according to media reports. Russian preparations have prompted a severe backlash from Ukraine. Ukraine’s parliament has passed a resolution regarding it, issuing a warning and calling on Russia to withdraw its deployment in Donbass immediately. Besides, Ukrainian leaders have even accused Russia of not agreeing on a ceasefire.
Relations between Russia and the West have soured in recent days, which Russia has openly acknowledged. Analysts fear that tensions between Russia and the West could escalate if a conflict erupts in Ukraine.
