Khashoggi Killing: Israel urges the US ‘to stick with’ Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman

Washington / Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the United States to not to take a stern stance against Saudi  Arabia saying, “The killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, was horrendous. However, the US should stick with the Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman”. The more significant problem, however, is Iran, reminded Prime Minister Netanyahu. Following Israel, Egypt also appealed to the US to maintain its strategic relations with Saudi Arabia.

Netanyahu is currently on a Europe tour, and an American daily had covered details of the visit in a report. Netanyahu clarified his stand on the Khashoggi killing during an address made to the leaders of Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Greece at a summit. At the time, he said, “What happened in the Istanbul consulate was horrendous, and it should be duly dealt with. Yet, it is essential for the stability of the world, and also of the region, that Saudi Arabia remains stable. We need to consider the repercussions the instability could cause,” and briefly appealed for backing Saudi Arabia.

“Khashoggi killing is certainly critical, but you cannot overlook the bigger threat which is from Iran,” stated Netanyahu. He highlighted the Iran-devised destructive attacks which were carried out in Denmark, Norway as also France, Germany and Belgium. The Prime Minister noted that a strong lead from Israeli intelligence agency had helped foil terror plots in France and Denmark. He added that stopping Iran was not just pertinent to Israel but also to Europe’s security.

Other leaders in Israel have also demanded that the United States and the European nations keep close watch over Iran’s plots in Europe. Denmark had accused the Iranian regime of conspiring to eliminate its opponents from the country. Denouncing the Iranian activities, Denmark had even called back its diplomats from Iran. Whereas, Norway had summoned Iran’s envoy over the incident of an alleged assassination. However, Iran had alleged the events to be a part of Israel’s conspiracy against it.

After stating that Iran was the biggest sponsor of terrorism, it appears that Israel has initiated a political offensive to prove that Iran poses a substantial threat to the European states.
