China’s cover-up of Coronavirus is like Russia’s Chernobyl disaster, US National Security Advisor claims

Washington: The US National Security Adviser, Robert O’Brien asserted China’s handling of the Coronavirus after its outbreak was similar to the Soviet Union’s cover-up of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986. O’Brien made the comment in an interview with a private news channel. The Chernobyl nuclear disaster that occurred in the then Soviet Union, in April of 1986, is believed to have killed more than 10,000 people.

‘The Coronavirus outbreak originated in China, and the country made every attempt to conceal the virus. In 1986, even the Soviet Union had tried to cover up the nuclear disaster. The Soviet Union’s attempts to delay disclosing the truth about the incident were revealed in a television series last year. After a while, we’ll see a similar disclosure of China’s handling of the Coronavirus as well,’ claimed the US National Security Adviser Robert O’Brian. The National Security Advisor went on to state that ‘It was a cover-up. And we’ll get to the bottom of it eventually’.

‘Currently, the US does not have concrete evidence to prove who has spread the COVID-19. When the virus began to spread, China expelled journalists from the region and also did not grant access to the US agencies. Whether the local authorities or the Chinese Communist Party is responsible for the spread, does not make much of a difference. It was a cover-up, and the US will get to the bottom of it,’ National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien assured. At the time, O’Brien even accused China of trying to steal Coronavirus secrets on its vaccine and cure.

The Novel Coronavirus began to spread in China last November. Nevertheless, China hid this information from the rest of the world until the end of January in the next year. After that, China consistently kept delaying the disclosure of this information pertaining to the spread of the virus. The journalists and doctors, who tried to inform about the virus, have gone missing or died under mysterious circumstances. Furthermore, the country even refused to provide virus samples to other countries. China even colluded with the World Health Organisation (WHO) for carrying out the cover-up.

As of now, the Coronavirus has spread to most countries of the world, killing nearly 350,000 people. Also, the global community is now blaming China for the cover-up and holding it accountable for the sizable deaths that have occurred resultantly. Given the allegations, the US National Security Advisor’s likening of the cover-up to Russia’s Chernobyl disaster is an indicator of the extensiveness of the deadly disease.

On April 26, 1986, the Soviet Union had tried to cover-up the meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant by displaying that only a few people had died in the disaster. However, the extensiveness of the catastrophe was observed as being significant. The dangerous levels of radiation released due to the incident, had forced Russia to vacate surrounding areas up to thousands of kilometres. In the next few years, the deaths due to the nuclear fallout were found to have been in hundreds. The Chernobyl incident is considered the world’s worst nuclear disaster.
