Tokyo: On the sidelines of the Chinese activities at the Indian borders, all other countries have begun to bolster their defence preparedness against Beijing. Japan has started the deployment of the Patriot air defence missile system on its military bases, which will be completed by the end of the month, sources said. Amid the Coronavirus crisis, China has ratcheted up its activities near Japan, and the deployment of the Patriot air defence missile system comes in response to it.
Last month, China had sent its Liaoning aircraft carrier and its strike group in the East China Sea near Japan for patrol. Before that, reports revealed Chinese fighters even tried to enter Japan’s airspace. The Commander of US forces in Japan had drawn attention to the surge in Chinese activities. Considering the recent developments, Japan’s moves to deploy missile batteries assume much significance.
Japan has initiated the process to deploy the advanced Patriot PS-3 MSE air defence missile system. The deployment will be complete by month-end. Sources said the deployment of military units would also be stepped up in addition to that of missiles.
Given the rising threat from China, Japan has taken aggressive steps to enhance its defence preparedness. Accordingly, Japan has shifted its defence policy with a significant increase in its defence spending. Moreover, Japan has even indicated developing an aircraft carrier.
