US FCC designates China’s Huawei and ZTE as threats to national security

Washington/Beijing: The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman, Ajit Pai, announced, ‘The Chinese telecommunications companies, Huawei and ZTE, have close ties to the ruling Chinese Communist Party and its military. Both companies are thus considered as threats to US national security’. The decision will come into effect immediately, and therefore both the Chinese companies and associated companies will not be able to carry out any transaction in the US. The decision is believed a part of Trump administration’s aggressive conflict. After the US announcement, allies India and the UK have also indicated of imposing a ban on the telecommunications companies.

Huawei and ZTE, us, uk, china‘Huawei and ZTE have close ties with the Chinese Communist Party and China’s military apparatus. Both companies are broadly subject to Chinese law, obligating them to cooperate with the country’s intelligence services. We cannot and will not allow the Chinese Communist Party to exploit network vulnerabilities and compromise our critical communications infrastructure. We are thereby declaring both Huawei and ZTE as threats to the US national security. The Chinese companies will not be able to be a part of the US telecommunications network and 5G technology in the future,’ said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai as he declared action against the two Chinese companies.

Huawei and ZTE, us, uk, chinaFor the last two years, US President Donald Trump has initiated an aggressive campaign against the influence of Chinese companies in the US. Under the campaign, the Chinese companies operating in the US in critical sectors related to its security have been subjected to action. Last year, President Trump had announced a national emergency as he targeted the Chinese telecommunications firms in the US. A ban on the Chinese company China Mobile had followed.

US action on the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei is considered a decisive phase in the US-China conflict. The US has consistently levelled allegations against the company that it was part of the Chinese Communist Party’s agenda, which was using Huawei in its plan to dominate the world’s communications systems. The US is even pressurizing its allies over introducing a ban on Huawei.

Huawei and ZTE, us, uk, chinaMeanwhile, US allies India and the UK have also indicated following suit after the US declared it a national security threat. The UK and India had permitted companies including those from China, to participate in the 5G infrastructure of the country. However, the UK has announced appointing a committee for reconsideration on the decision.

UK MP Oliver Dowden hinted at introducing a ban on the Chinese company ‘Huawei’ in the next few days at the parliament. The UK is willing to pay any price for its national security, Dowden said. In a recent cabinet meeting, a ban on the Chinese companies, Huawei and ZTE, in India was under discussion, local media reported. Only two days ago, India had announced a ban on 59 Chinese apps. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed the decision. Pompeo said that the US offered full support to India on the matter.
