Washington/Taipei: Analysts assert that the US policy on China will change after Joe Biden becomes president. However, signs indicate towards Biden not adopting a liberal approach on China. Statements of General Stanley McChrystal, a former military official and Joe Biden’s military advisor, only confirms it. McChrystal has sounded the alarm and said, ‘It is high-time for the US to respond to the threat China poses to Taiwan.’
General Stanley McChrystal hinted at a possible conflict as he said, ‘In the past few years, China has greatly increased its military capacities. China claims to have developed hypersonic missiles that can sink US aircraft carriers. Its rising military capabilities have changed the equations in the region. When it comes to China, Biden administration cannot take things lightly. My concern would be, we wake up one morning, and China may have just showered Taiwan with rockets and taken it over. To avert such a scenario, the US must respond to the threat to Taiwan.’
Biden’s advisor suggested that in order to respond, the US must not only increase its military capabilities but also strengthen the front by assisting allied and partner nations. Besides, the US must think like an Asian power to counter China, Gen McChrystal said. At the same time, he warned, ‘It may have been too late to deter China from military aggression in the Indo-Pacific. If the ship hasn’t sailed, it’s certainly got up steam and thinking about sailing,’ and cautioned against a war most likely to occur in the Indo-Pacific.
Gen Stanley McChrystal, who is an advisor to current President-elect Joe Biden, had played a vital role in the wars fought in Afghanistan and the Middle East. McChrystal started serving in the military since the 1990 Gulf War and assumed a central role in the Iraq War that began in 2003 and then in the fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Also, after serving as the commander of US and NATO forces in 2009-10 in Afghanistan, Gen McChrystal had declared his retirement.
As Biden’s advisor made statements regarding a possible China-Taiwan war, Taiwan has hinted at wanting to procure an additional 300 Patriot missiles. Taiwan’s’ Apple Daily’ has reported that the island’s Air Force Command has begun taking steps in that direction. Sources have said that if the US approves the sale, it will take Taiwan’s stockpile of Patriot missiles to 650 by 2027. The US had made a $620 million deal with Taiwan for a Patriot missile upgrade package. Even so, Taiwan’s interest in buying new missiles after that is noteworthy.
