Moscow: As new US President Joe Biden has decided to pursue an aggressive policy on Russia, Moscow has also begun taking swift action against it. Last week, President Biden had ordered the deployment of B-1 bombers at an airbase in Norway. Russia thereby stepped-up patrolling its advanced bombers in the Arctic region even before the US aircraft arrived in Europe. A few days ago, Russian bombers were reportedly flying near Iceland and Norway’s airspace in the Arctic region.
This week, four US B-1 bombers are to land at Orland base in Norway. A unit of 200 personnel will also be deployed at the Norway base. Sources said a small contingent of airmen had already arrived at the airbase to prepare for the bomber deployments. It is the first time that the United States has independently deployed bombers in Norway.
In the wake of the US deployment, Russia had sent its advanced Tu-160 bombers near Norway and Iceland’s borders. In addition, MiG-31 fighter jets were also sent for the mission, according to Russian sources. Although Russia has previously patrolled the Arctic with bombers and fighter jets, this is the first time that its bombers have been sent near the Norway-Iceland border.
Russia’s deployment is believed to be part of a warning to the United States. Russia’s Foreign Ministry’s response to the US decision to deploy bombers in Norway only confirms it. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Maria Zakharova assertively said, ‘We cannot speak the language of silence while tensions are rising on Russia’s borders. The ground is being prepared for exercises in the European countries for military action against Russia.’
In recent years, Russia has significantly increased the number of military bases in the Arctic and its deployments. The growing presence of Russian fighter jets and submarines has been a cause for concern for European countries. Nevertheless, Russia has repeatedly stated that all the deployments were being made in self-defence.
