Biden administration hints at taking action against Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

Washington: US intelligence agency has accused Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of ordering Journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s execution. US intelligence has released a report in this regard, and the media has highlighted the news. The United States has thereby indicated that it will be targeting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman soon. Reports that the Biden administration was preparing for it had surfaced already. However, there is a stark difference of opinion among US analysts over whether the Biden administration’s efforts to oust Crown Prince Mohammed, who has managed to consolidate power in Saudi Arabia, will succeed.

On October 2, 2018, US-based Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. The killing of Khashoggi, who worked for a leading US newspaper, had drawn severe backlash from the Western world. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was also accused of approving Khashoggi’s assassination. Initially, Saudi had denied the allegations. The then US President Donald Trump had also avoided taking action against it, assigning more importance to friendly relations with Saudi Arabia.

Nevertheless, it is being debated that the Biden administration would bring the Khashoggi assassination case into focus and add to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s difficulties. Accordingly, the Biden administration released a report on Friday of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on the Khashoggi case. The report states that the Saudi Crown Prince had ordered Khashoggi’s arrest or execution. Also, Prince Mohammed bin Salman has claimed control of Saudi Arabia since 2017. The action, therefore, is claimed, could not have been executed without his orders.

Meanwhile, relations between the United States and Saudi Arabia are most likely to be strained over the next four years during President Biden’s tenure. During this period, the US and Saudi are expected to develop differences over Iran’s nuclear deal, Saudi offensive in Yemen, Libya, and human rights issues. Besides, Saudi Arabia would also face challenges, the US analyst warned in an interview with an Iranian newspaper. Moreover, by targeting Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Khashoggi assassination case, the Biden administration has just hinted at that.
