President Trump designates Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as terrorist organisation

President Trump designates Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as terrorist organisation

Washington: ‘Iran is not only a State Sponsor of Terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism. The US State Department is convinced that IRGC is using terrorism, to achieve Iran’s objectives. The United States is, thereby, designating the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organisation,’ US President Donald Trump declared. President Trump’s announcement on social media created a sensation around the world. Furthermore, the international news agencies claimed that it is the first instance of a country’s military unit being declared a terrorist organisation.

The United States has already blacklisted organisations, companies and even individuals from the military outfit. However, the US President has indicated that the action against Iran was likely to intensify with the announcement which terms Iran’s elite military unit, the IRGC a terrorist outfit. Also, the United States is already prepared with the sanctions against the IRGC, President Trump said. He informed that the economic pressures on the IRGC and in turn on Iran, which participates in terrorist activities would be increased further from here on.

After the announcement, a clear message must have been delivered that no association with and support of the Iranian military unit, IRGC would be tolerated by the United States, warned President Trump. Trump issued a warning to the Asian and European companies associated with the army unit saying that dealing with the IRGC was like nurturing terrorism. Nevertheless, the international media have claimed that the US decision may have a direct impact on all the groups in Lebanon and Iraq, affiliated to the IRGC.

After the US President’s declaration, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo announced that Trump’s decision would take effect in a week. ‘The IRGC has been involved in terrorist activities for the last 40 years, under the guise of a military outfit, Secretary of State Pompeo accused. The unit built terrorist organisations around the world and continued with terrorist activities. The IRGC is responsible for the instability in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and other countries in the Middle East,’ alleged Pompeo. Moreover, Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook, said that they arrived at a decision only after due considerations and discussions with all the administrative agencies.

Meanwhile, the US action against groups in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, that are associated with the IRGC now appears more likely.

Iran’s Rial plunges after US terror designation to IRGC

The United States announcement, declaring the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organisation had a direct impact on the Iranian economy. It caused a crash of the Iranian currency, Rial by nearly seven and a half per cent.

Up till Sunday, the Rial was valued at 133,000 to the US Dollar. However, after the US designated the IRGC a terrorist organisation, the Rial weakened to 134,000 to a US Dollar. Additionally, Iranian analysts express concerns over the inflation in the state rising dangerously in the near future.
