Washington/Taipei: ‘The United States should send its military commandos to Taiwan and train them on how to counter China’s attack. As China prepares to invade Taiwan, the United States needs to take such steps that China may not have even considered to deal it a blow,’ Christopher Maier suggested. Christopher Maier has been nominated as the secretary of defense for United States Special Operations. Therefore, his advice assumes much significance.
‘The United States should make serious efforts to increase Taiwan’s capabilities. The military capabilities of China and Taiwan cannot be compared. Therefore, we can strengthen Taiwan’s capabilities with the help of special operations forces,’ Maier suggested the US Senate Armed Services Committee. Maier expressed concerns over China likely attacking Taiwan with the use of amphibious warships.
The US Marines had landed in Taiwan in November last year. Reports said the US Marines had trained Taiwanese soldiers. Although the Pentagon officials denied the claims, the Taiwanese media had reported the US Marines to have landed in Taiwan. After that, former Chinese military officials expressed outrage and threatened to seize Taiwan. Maier tabled a proposal to increase political cooperation with Taiwan in the US House of Representatives, along with another to extend military cooperation with the country before in the Senate. Republican Senator Steve Chabot and Democratic Senator Brad Sherman jointly proposed an act to increase the powers of Taiwanese representatives in the United States.
Taiwan’s representative office in the United States is known as the Taiwan Council for US Affairs. However, the proposal calls for renaming the office as ‘Taiwan Representation Office’ to give more significance to the cooperation with Taiwan. Chabot and Sherman have both said it would make it easier for the US State Department to co-operate with Taiwanese representatives. The Taiwanese media claim that the proposal will deal blows to China’s ‘One China Policy‘ and even strengthen ties between the United States and Taiwan. A strong reaction from China is expected.
Meanwhile, a Chinese-built airport in the western Pacific island nation of Kiribati could turn troublesome for the United States, warns Taiwan’s military scholar Chang Jung-ming. Chang said China could repair the airfield used in World War II and use it to monitor US movements in the region. Kiribati is about 1,864 nautical miles from the US island of Hawaii.
