Sana: Within hours of its attacks on Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip, Israel launched strikes on Hezbollah bases in Syria. According to Syrian media, Israel targeted the Golan Heights in Syria with tanks, destroying a military base. Iran-backed Hezbollah was accused of using the base against Israel.
Strikes were launched in the southern Syrian province of Quneitra on Thursday morning. The local media reported that Israeli tanks attacked a Syrian Army observation post in the town of Al- Qahtaniyah. Also, the number of casualties in the attack has not been disclosed. The observation post, which is just 150 meters from the border, is claimed to be under the control of the Syrian Army’s 19th Brigade.
Israel, however, has accused Iran and the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah of taking advantage of the civil war in Syria and control of the region over the past few years. Reports say Hezbollah commander Jawad Hashem visits the base frequently. Jawad is said to be the son of Haji Hashem, a senior Hezbollah commander. It was not immediately clear if Jawad Hashem was present at the time of the attack. If that is the case, it could be a significant blow to Hezbollah’s organization in Syria.
Israel had warned of taking action against Hezbollah strongholds in Syria at the end of last month. Israeli drones had dropped leaflets with photos of Jawad Hashem in the Golan Heights region of Syria. ‘Hezbollah is using the Syrian people,’ Israel warned in the letter. Israel had dropped such leaflets to warn the Syrian people before striking the Hezbollah bases, reports said. Israel then launched attacks on the site.
Israel has already warned that it will not tolerate the activities of Iran, Hezbollah and other Iranian-affiliated groups in the Syrian-controlled Golan Heights. The movements of Iran and Iranian-linked terrorist groups along the border pose a challenge to Israel’s sovereignty. Therefore, Israel had declared that it had the right to deal with them. An Israeli newspaper citing military sources stated that Israel carried out 50 attacks in Syria in 2020.
In the last few years, Iran has stepped up its efforts to strengthen its military grip in Syria. For this, Iran has naval bases at Tartus and Latakia in northwestern Syria. Also, it has two large bases and an arms warehouse in the capital, Damascus. After launching attacks on the bases, Israel said it would not allow Iran to consolidate control over Syria.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has not claimed responsibility for the operation in Syria. For two days in a row, however, attacks were launched on the bases of Iran-backed terrorist organizations. Israeli observers and the media are bringing to notice that the attacks took place just four days after the change in power. The media believes that Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who formed a coalition government with liberal groups, is sending a warning to Iran through the action.
