Taiwan’s foreign minister accuses China of wanting to emulate Taliban for taking over Taiwan

Taipei/Beijing: Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu has alleged that the Chinese Communist Party wants to emulate the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan from last week to conquer Taiwan. At the time, Wu also warned China that Taiwan has both the will and the means to defend itself.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani resigned last Sunday after surrendering to the Taliban. Since then, there have been varied reactions from the international community, with several political leaders, analysts and experts severely criticizing the US decision. Some analysts have claimed that the US withdrawal from Afghanistan has caused problems for other countries, including Taiwan.

The Chinese media and social media also covered the US defeat in Afghanistan. The Chinese press targeted Taiwan while comparing it to Afghanistan. The daily ‘Strait Herald’ warned Taiwan not to trust the United States much and look at Afghanistan. Also, the China Affairs website had taken a jibe at Taiwan, saying the United States would abandon it if a war broke out in the near future. The Chinese official mouthpiece ‘The Global Times’ had threatened that the US withdrawal from Afghanistan is a lesson for the Taiwanese authorities, and they should avoid becoming US pawns.

Since Tuesday, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has launched live-fire assault drills near Taiwan. Therefore, the issue of Taiwan’s security has come to the fore again. Although the United States has reassured Taiwan, China has continued with its aggressive stance. The foreign minister’s statements made in response also demonstrate that Taiwan has taken an aggressive stance.

Foreign Minister Joseph Wu accused China of wanting to emulate the Taliban and planning to take over Taiwan. However, China’s dream will not come true, as Taiwan has both the will and the weapons to defend itself, Foreign Minister Wu warned. Over the past year, the United States has signed agreements with Taiwan to supply large weapons, including fighter jets, missiles, and artillery. At the same time, Taiwan is even indigenously developing fighter jets, warships and submarines.
