London/Kabul: ‘The withdrawal of the United States and the West from Afghanistan is a foreign policy failure of historic proportions. The humiliating retreat bolsters China’s global ambitions’, former UK national security adviser Kim Darroch claimed. Darroch slammed the US decision saying, ‘US President Joe Biden’s hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan displays a hollowness quotient in his recent declaration of ‘America is back’. A few days ago, a senior European Union official had also warned that China and Russia would seize control of Afghanistan after the West’s withdrawal.
Kim Darroch, former British Ambassador to the United States and an ex-national security advisor, said the developments in Afghanistan is a sign of a fundamental shift in global power. Also, he brought to notice that China and Russia were keeping a close eye on the withdrawal of Western countries from Afghanistan. ‘Russia has seen defeat in Afghanistan, so this country won’t interfere too much with Afghanistan, but will certainly look for opportunities to benefit,’ he warned. The former British official also warned that China might look for opportunities to take considerable advantage of the situation.
About possible Chinese moves, Darroch further points out that ‘The US withdrawal from Afghanistan shows a fundamental lack of strategic patience, and reinforces China’s perception that this country may leave the campaign halfway through before the job is done. China will therefore start implementing its ambitions more aggressively. China will continue to bully and intimidate neighbouring countries in the South China Sea, threaten Taiwan, etc. At the same time, through projects such as the Belt-and-Road initiative, China will continue building relationships and boost financial leverage globally.’
‘This Western retreat will add to the Chinese regime’s belief that this is their time. And perhaps they are right,’ the former UK Ambassador warned. He also advised that the US and the West should have maintained their forces longer in Afghanistan. In support of his statement, he pointed to the military deployments to South Korea, Cyprus, Bosnia, and Kosovo retained for decades. Darroch further claims that the US decision to withdraw from Afghanistan and its handling by the Biden administration has affected the “special relationship” between the United States and the UK.
Former British Ambassador to the United States Kim Darroch also criticized Biden, saying, ‘In announcing ‘America is Back’, Biden, in fact, pursued an ‘America First’ policy.’ Simultaneously, the former UK Ambassador claimed that Biden’s presidency was irretrievably tarnished due to the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
