Russia launches heavy missile strikes in eastern and southern Ukraine, including Kyiv

Moscow / Kyiv – Russia has responded strongly to an attack on a Black Sea warship and the defence aid provided by Western countries to Ukraine. Russia has launched intense missile strikes in eastern and southern Ukraine, including a military factory near the capital, Kyiv. Ukraine has lost nearly 3,000 troops, with more than 10,000 wounded in the conflict against Russia. Against the backdrop of these attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced information regarding Ukraine’s military mortality for the first time.

On Friday, Russia’s Defence Ministry had acknowledged that a missile cruiser Moskva, leading the ‘Black Sea Fleet’, had sunk. Russia had clarified that the warship sank due to a fire on it. However, Ukraine and the United States have claimed that there was a missile strike on the warship. Ukraine has been said to have sunk Moskva with the help of Neptune anti-ship missiles. It is considered a major blow to Russia’s defence forces, and there are indications that Russia will retaliate strongly against this.

Moreover, missile attacks in Ukraine on Friday and Saturday seem to confirm these indications. Russia on Thursday had targeted a Ukrainian missile factory near Kyiv. This was followed by a missile attack on a military factory in the Darnytskyi district near Kyiv’s capital on Saturday early morning. Russia claimed that the factory was destroyed. Authorities of Ukraine informed that one person was killed and several others were injured in the attack.

Missiles and rocket attacks on Kyiv were followed by attacks in Lviv in western Ukraine, Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, and the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions in southern Ukraine. Information has also surfaced that artillery, mortars and rockets attacked several cities in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk provinces. It has also been claimed that a Russian squad captured the steel factory in the town of Mariupol. While the extent of Russian attacks escalates, Ukrainian President Zelensky declared information on Ukraine’s military mortality.

Ukraine has lost nearly 3,000 troops and has injured about 10,000 in a Russian offensive on February 24. Zelensky has said that he has not yet received total figures on civilian casualties. At the same time, he informed that the difficulties facing the Ukrainian defence forces have increased in eastern and southern Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russia has issued an aggressor warning over US and Western countries’ defence supplies to Ukraine. ‘We call on the United States and its allies to stop the irresponsible militarization of Ukraine, which implies unpredictable consequences for regional and international security,’ Russia warned.
