Moscow/Kyiv – Russia has intensified its attacks to seize control of Ukraine’s Donbas region. In the last 24 hours, Russia has seized control of two cities in the Donbas, and a decisive battle is underway for control over Severodonetsk and Lysychansk. Information has surfaced that missile attacks and airstrikes had been carried out even in Dnipropetrovsk in central Ukraine and the southern province of Zaporizhzhia, along with Donbas.
Moreover, Russia has focused on its military campaign in Donbas after seizing Mariupol. The Donbas region is known as an important industrial sector in Europe. This sector is considered important in the Ukrainian economy due to the coal mines, Shale gas reserves and manufacture of heavy machinery. With a large Russian speaking population in this region, the region is in many ways close to Russia. Hence, Russian President Vladimir Putin is said to have made Russia’s control of Donbas an issue of priority.
Following the invasion of Ukraine in late February, Russian forces continued their campaign in the region at a slow pace. However, in the second phase of the Ukrainian invasion, the Russian forces focused all their attention on the Donbas region. Russian President Putin may declare a ceasefire in the coming days after completely seizing the Donbas region, have claimed media and analysts. The ongoing attacks by Russian forces seem to confirm this.
Russia has seized most of the Luhansk province in Donbas in the last few days. If Severodonetsk, the capital of Luhansk, were seized, the entire province would fall to Russia. Intense attacks on Severodonetsk have been going on since last week, and Russian forces have succeeded in infiltrating some parts of the city.
Along with Severodonetsk, there is a decisive struggle to seize Lysychansk, the capital of Donetsk. Sources informed that the Russian army was preparing to siege the city. Earlier, Russia seized the town of Svitlodarsk in Donetsk.
Attacks are also being launched on Kramatorsk, Lyman, Avdiivka, Bakhmut and the two chief cities. Russian forces have launched massive airstrikes, including artillery, tanks and rockets, Ukrainian officials have informed. In addition to the Donbas, the Dnipropetrovsk in central Ukraine and Zaporizhzhia province in southern Ukraine are also under heavy attack. Russia fired four cruise missiles at Zaporizhzhia province on Wednesday. The local officials informed that three missiles were also fired on Dnipropetrovsk, along with airstrikes. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Western countries of not being united against the Russian invasion.
