Kyiv/Moscow – Ukrainian officials claimed that the situation on the battlefield has begun to change in the conflict against Russia, and Ukrainian forces will gain complete control of Kherson province by September. Ukrainian forces have been counteroffensive instead of defensive, said Sergiy Khlan, a senior Ukrainian official in Kherson province. Two weeks ago, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk warned of significant action in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces, urging citizens to evacuate the region immediately.
Moreover, since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Kherson was the first major city to fall under Russian control. In the subsequent period, Russia gained control over almost 90% of the Kherson province. The region is considered significant to the success of the Russian campaign, as it adjoins the province of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. Russia needs to hold this region to gain control over Mykolaiv and Odessa.
This province in southern Ukraine is known as the ‘fruit basket’ of Ukraine and is a leader in maritime transport and trade exports. Therefore, this province has become significant also for Ukraine. Ukraine’s selection of this province while planning a counteroffensive against Russian forces underscores its position. As Russia’s military campaign aims are currently focused around Donbas, most deployments are in that region. Taking advantage of this, Ukraine had increased the scope of attacks on Kherson from the beginning of this month.
Two weeks ago, Ukrainian forces launched a major attack in the Nova Kakhovka area of Kherson. After the success, consistent attacks have begun in Kherson city and nearby areas. A few days ago, the Ukrainian army also successfully destroyed a vital bridge for Russian military operations. In the wake of this success one after the other, Ukraine seems to have claimed to gain control of the entire province in just two months. It has surfaced that foreign weapons played a significant role in the success of the Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian authorities informed that the US and UK systems were used in the attack in Kherson.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Russia has increased the intensity of its attacks in the Donbas region. Ukraine has informed that a ground assault is underway by Russian forces in Sloviansk, Bakhmut and Seversknik.
