Erbil: Iran has continued its attacks on the Kurdistan region, blaming Kurdish organisations in Iraq for the violence that has erupted in Iran. Kurdish leaders have criticised Iran, saying it is increasing the intensity of these attacks, and innocent Kurds are being killed. Meanwhile, as Iranian attacks on Iraq continue, US special envoy met with Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan Province. The United States has expressed concern over this Iranian attack, and US senators are demanding increased pressure on Iran to prevent these attacks.
Strong protests have erupted in Iran following the suspicious death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish girl. Iran has accused Kurdish organisations of inciting violence in the name of Mahsa in the country. Moreover, Iran alleged it was getting support from the United States and Israel. Also, after initially taking action against the Kurds in Iran, the Revolutionary Guards initiated attacks on Kurdistan in Iraq with rockets, missiles and drones. Iran said that the Kurds in Iraq are supporting the ones in Iran, and their collaboration has strengthened the protests in Iran. That is why Iran is launching these attacks to teach the Kurds in Iraq a lesson.
Last Wednesday, 18 people were killed, and 58 were injured in the attacks carried out by Iran in the Kurdistan province of Iraq. A woman from the United States was also among the 14 people killed in the Revolutionary Guards attack six days ago. The United States criticised this action taken in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The Revolutionary Guards have announced that they will continue these attacks until the threat to Iranian security is eliminated.
Two days ago, Iran increased its military deployment near the border of Iraq’s Kurdistan province. At the same time, reports state that Iran has deployed rocket launchers near the border with Iraq. Iran is claimed to have started these military movements to intensify its operations against the Kurds. Kurdish leaders criticise Iran saying killing innocent Kurds because of its anger against them. The Kurds have also started getting support from the United States against these Iranian attacks.
Nicholas Granger, the US special envoy to northeast Syria appointed by President Joe Biden, visited Iraq’s Kurdistan province on Wednesday. The Prime Minister of the Autonomous Kurdistan Province, Masrour Barzani, met with US special envoy Granger and criticised the attacks from Iran. Barzani’s office announced that the ongoing attacks on Kurds in Iraq and Syria had been discussed, and the United States will cooperate with the Kurds in this matter. Also, Barzani clarified that there was a discussion on building a significant political movement for independence in these areas by bringing together the Kurds of Iraq and Syria.
Meanwhile, the Kurds, divided into Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey and Armenia, have been demanding an independent country for the past seven decades. So far, the western countries have ignored their demands, using the Kurds for their interests. However, the policy adopted by the Biden administration towards the Kurds after Iran initiated action against them is very noteworthy.
