North Korea fires 200 artillery shells into maritime buffer zone near South Korea

Seoul – Unnerved by the growing military cooperation between the US and South Korea, North Korea on Thursday fired nearly two hundred artillery shells near the South Korean border for two consecutive hours. Simultaneously, ten North Korean military planes patrolled near the border of South Korea. South Korea accused North Korea of these actions as a violation of the 2018 military agreement. Reports were released that South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol have opened talks on a nuclear partnership with the US. A South Korean newspaper claimed President Yeol was eager to deploy US aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines to Seoul. The US and South Korean governments have not confirmed this news. But North Korea, unsettled by the news, fired from cannons after midnight, around 1 a.m. on Thursday.

As per the information published by the South Korean military, the North Korean military fired at least 170 artillery shells in two hours between one and three after midnight. These cannon shells fell in the maritime buffer zone, the marine prohibited area dividing the two Korean countries. Some international news organisations have claimed North Korea attacked with at least 450 artillery shells. Ten North Korean military aircraft had dangerously travelled near South Korean airspace earlier.

South Korean President Yeol’s office severely criticised North Korea’s movements. A ‘Comprehensive Military Agreement-CMA’ was concluded between the two Korean countries in 2018. Accordingly, both Korean countries agreed not to violate the buffer zone area. But South Korea has accused North Korea of violating a four-year-old military agreement by striking cannon shells in the same place. Moreover, leaders of the opposition in South Korea have demanded President Yeol should break up the CMA agreement and increase military activities near the North Korean border.

Meanwhile, meetings between the US, South Korean and Japanese military officials have increased since North Korea’s successive missile tests. The United States, South Korea and Japan have indicated the implementation of a joint military policy against this threat from North Korea. Also, the deployment of advanced warships, fighter jets and air defence systems has increased in this area. These military moves of the US upset China and North Korea.
