11 soldiers were killed in a terror attack on a Russian military base

Moscow/Kyiv: At least 11 soldiers have been killed in a terrorist attack on a military base in Russia’s Belgorod province. Russian authorities reported that two foreign nationals, who had come for military training, seized weapons at the base and fired indiscriminately. Russian sources said both attackers were killed, and the death toll is likely to rise. Russian bases, power stations, civilian settlements, fuel depots, and bridges have been continuously targeted by the Ukrainian military and intelligence agencies in the past few months. Against this background, the new attack attracts much attention.

Fresh recruits are being trained for new deployments at a military base in Belgorod province, which is part of Russia’s Western Military District. During training on Saturday, two of the recruits picked up weapons from the base and started firing indiscriminately at army personnel and officials. A total of 11 soldiers and officers were killed on the spot, while 15 people were seriously injured. Russian sources reported that snipers had killed the attackers. Also, the Russian news agency Tass said that the attackers are from a country that was previously a part of the Russian Federation.

Western media claimed that the number of Russian soldiers killed was more than 20. At the same time, the reports also said that there were a total of three assailants and one of whom had managed to escape. The western media reported that the attackers were from Tajikistan. However, Russia has not confirmed these reports. Belgorod province is located on the border with Ukraine. Therefore, since the conflict began between Russia and Ukraine, Kyiv has continuously targeted this region. Along with military bases, Ukraine had fired rockets and missiles at power plants and fuel depots in the area. Drones were also used for launching the attacks.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry informed that Russia has again launched missile attacks on Ukraine. These attacks were carried out with the help of fighter jets and hit Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk, along with the capital Kyiv. The attacks targeted infrastructure, military bases and weapons stockpiles. Since last week, Russia has dramatically intensified its missile attacks on infrastructure in Ukraine. The attacks have disrupted the electricity and water supply in Ukraine. Complete blackouts have hit many cities in Ukraine for long durations. Therefore, the Ukrainian government has urged its citizens to increase the use of candles.

A new batch of Russian soldiers arrived in Belarus on Saturday. This unit will be deployed in the border areas of Belarus and Ukraine. While deploying military units, Russia has also signalled that Belarus’ fighter jets will be readied for nuclear attacks. Russia said that the Su-25 fighter jets of Belarus would be modified for this purpose.
