Ukraine launches drone attack on Russia’s Engels airport

Moscow/Kyiv: On Monday, three Russian soldiers were killed in a drone attack launched by Ukraine on Russia’s Engels airport. Some Russian aircraft were claimed to have been damaged during the attack. However, it has not been confirmed as yet. The Ukrainian drone was shot down before hitting the intended target, Russia’s Defense Ministry said. This is the second time this month that Ukraine has carried out a drone attack on the Engels airport. On December 5, two bases, namely ‘Engels’ and ‘Ryazan’ were attacked by drones. Photographs showing the damage to Russian bombers in the attack were released.

Engels airportIn the last few months, Russia’s military bases, fuel facilities, railways, power plants and shopping malls have been repeatedly targeted. Jack Murphy, a former senior US official, claimed that these attacks were a secret war against Russia by the CIA and NATO member countries. Murphy also said that US President Joe Biden approved the attacks. Reports stated that the US administration had permitted Ukraine to launch attacks deep into Russian territory.

Therefore, the second consecutive drone attack launched on the Russian airport draws much attention. The Ukrainian military has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack early Monday. However, senior Ukrainian officials responded aggressively to it and said Russia would have to suffer the consequences of its actions in Ukraine. The Ukrainian authorities also warned that if the Russian authorities believe that attacks cannot be carried out deep into Russian territory, it is a misunderstanding that they have; such attacks will continue repeatedly. Ukraine had earlier struck military bases on Russian territory in Crimea, Belgorod, Bryansk and others. However, all these bases are close to the Russia-Ukraine border. The Engels airfield is about 750 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. Bombers are deployed at this base to launch attacks on Ukraine. Therefore, an attack on an airbase so far inside the Russian territory assumes much significance. Previously, on Sunday, Russia had attacked the Donbas region along with Kharkiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine said artillery guns, rockets, and missiles were used for these attacks.

Meanwhile, Belarus, a neighbour to Russia and Ukraine, announced the deployment of Russian-made Iskander missiles. The Iskander is said to have a range of 500 kilometres and can carry a ‘nuclear warhead’. Reports reveal that even as Iskander missiles are being deployed in Belarus, Russia has begun additional deployment of S-300V air defence systems on its territory.

Russia’s nuclear weapons are the only thing preventing the West from declaring war on Russia: Former President Dmitry Medvedev

Moscow: ‘Western countries have not openly declared war against Russia because they are aware of Russia’s nuclear arsenal and its policy regarding its use. They are fully aware that if Russia is threatened, it can use nuclear weapons,’ warned former President Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev also alleged that while the Western alliance is trying to avoid nuclear annihilation, on the other side, it is trying to humiliate and weaken Russia more and more. He also warned in an article written in a Russian daily that the world is on the brink of World War III unless Russia receives security guarantees.
