Russian launches missile strikes in Mykolaiv

Moscow/Kyiv/Washington: Russia has launched missile strikes in southern Ukraine’s Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions in the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian Army is said to be amassing troops to launch a counteroffensive in the same area. Therefore, the increased intensity of Russian attacks in this area becomes noteworthy. In the wake of these Russian strikes, senior US officials have warned that Russian armed forces may launch a new attack on Ukraine in the coming weeks.

MykolaivIn the past few days, conflicting information about the planned Ukrainian counteroffensive has been coming out. Information ‘leaked’ from the US Department of Defense, claims by the US media and statements made by Ukrainian officials indicate that this counteroffensive will likely be on the areas controlled by Russia in southern Ukraine. A few days ago, the senior leaders of pro-Russian groups said that military mobilisation was underway in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

Against this backdrop, Russian forces have also focused their attention on the provinces in southern Ukraine. They are emphasising strengthening defences in both Zaporizhzhia and Kherson provinces. Hundreds of kilometres of trenches have been dug, and a large number of tunnels have also been planted. At the same time, a large military deployment has been made to both these provinces, including units of the Air Force.

Missile attacks from missile systems deployed in the Black Sea and Zaporizhzhia have also intensified. In the last 24 hours, there have been attacks in Mykolaiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, and according to Ukraine, the missile attacks have caused a lot of damage. Along with missiles, rockets and cannons have also been used in the attack on Zaporizhzhia.

In the year since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in Ukraine, Western media and organisations claimed that Russian armed forces had suffered huge losses and Russia’s weapons stockpiles had greatly reduced. Russia was said to have taken out the weapons stockpile of World War II and the Cold War era for the conflict. However, the attacks by Russian forces in the last two months show that the reality is far from what was claimed.

It has been confirmed by the statements made by senior US officials. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby has warned that Russia will invade parts of Ukraine after the weather improves in Ukraine. As the US circles, which had made claims of Ukraine launching a counteroffensive on Russia, have started making statements about Russia’s new attack, this matter has assumed much significance.
