Ukraine launches major attacks on Russia’s Bakhmut and Donbas front

Kyiv/Moscow: Reports say the Ukrainian Army has launched a major attack on the Russian front in the Bakhmut and Donbas. Claims have also been made that the Ukrainian military has breached Russia’s defences in some areas. However, Russia’s Defence Ministry has rejected these claims and clarified that it delivered a befitting response to Ukraine’s attacks in Donetsk, Bakhmut and Soledar. The ‘Wagner Group’, instrumental in the Russian offensive in Bakhmut, confirmed Ukraine’s claims and announced that the ‘Spring Counteroffensive’ had begun.

Bakhmut and DonbasOver the past few weeks, the Russian military has greatly intensified its attacks in the Donbas region. Ukraine is said to have suffered heavy casualties due to these attacks. The Russian offensive appeared to be gaining success due to the capture of Soledar City and the control of 95 per cent of Bakhmut. The media had claimed that Ukraine would respond to this Russian front with a counteroffensive campaign. However, the Ukrainian government had stated that it would take longer to launch the counteroffensive campaign.

Against this background, the claims made by Ukraine in the last 24 hours are noteworthy. Social media channels in Ukraine have released reports of large-scale attacks on the Russian front. It mentions the attacks carried out in Soledar, Bakhmut and Donetsk areas. The Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister confirmed the attacks in Bakhmut. Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar claimed that in the past few days, the Ukrainian Army had captured a two-kilometre section of Bakhmut, and the Russian troops had to back off.

This statement made regarding Bakhmut was also confirmed by the Russian private military company “Wagner Group”. Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, said that the Russian military had lost parts of Bakhmut. Russia’s Defense Ministry has denied these claims. The Ministry explained that in some parts of North Bakhmut, the army units have reorganized for strategic purposes and have taken the lead in the new areas. However, Prigozhin has criticized this revelation and retorted to it, calling it a retreat.

Russian sources said the Ukrainian military had carried out nearly 30 strikes in parts of the Donetsk region, along with Soledar and Bakhmut. Nevertheless, all these attacks have been repulsed, and the Russian Defence Ministry claimed that the Ukrainian Army had suffered huge losses. Russia also explained that the Ukrainian Army could not break the defences of the Russian Army. The Russian Defense Ministry also clarified that Ukraine had not launched attacks in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson provinces.
