Moscow: ‘Nuclear weapons are created to guarantee our security in the broader sense and the existence of the Russian state. Currently, there is no need to use these weapons. Also, we have more weapons like these than the NATO countries, and they know it,’ Russian President Vladimir Putin warned. The Russian President also said that since Russia has a high number of nuclear warheads, Western countries have been trying to reduce its number. At the same time, raising the issue of the continuous supply of arms to Ukraine by Western countries, President Putin indicated that it had also increased the possibility of NATO getting drawn into the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
A few days ago, Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, Russia’s neighbouring country, threatened that the country would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons. Moreover, Sergey Karaganov, a close aide of Putin, claimed that Russia could save humanity from a dangerous global disaster by using nuclear weapons. After that, President Putin also shared information about Russia’s nuclear weapons entering Belarus.
Against this background, Putin’s comparison of Russian and NATO nuclear weapons is noteworthy. Before making this statement at the St. Petersburg Forum, the Russian President indicated that the possibility of NATO getting involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict had increased. NATO member countries have been continuously supplying advanced and heavy weapons to Ukraine. Besides, talks have also started on the issue of delivering fighter aircraft in the coming times. Putin has said that due to this arms supply, there was a grave danger of NATO getting drawn into the conflict. Putin had issued a serious warning previously that the Russia-Ukraine conflict may flare up due to the Western countries’ continuous supply of weapons to Ukraine and transform into a nuclear war.
Meanwhile, against the backdrop of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, the UK intelligence agency has claimed that both countries have suffered huge casualties. The much-discussed counteroffensive is said to have started two weeks ago, on June 4. The campaign targeted Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia provinces. In the last 14 days, the intensity of the ongoing attacks on these provinces has increased. For this, new military units trained by Western countries have been deployed here. Along with this, priority has been given to using weapons and defence systems obtained from Western countries.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had lost around 7,500 soldiers in just ten days in the new Ukrainian campaign. Defence Ministry spokesperson clarified that it included the soldiers who were killed and injured. The statement released by the UK agencies appears to confirm the information Russia has shared.
