Moscow – Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, had ordered his troops to advance towards Moscow’s capital. Russian President Vladimir Putin had accused Prigozhin of treason, calling it a betrayal. While there was a strong possibility of a fierce conflict between the Wagner Group and the Russian army, the issue suddenly appeared to have ended. Prigozhin has ordered the soldiers of the Wagner Group to withdraw. Besides, it has also become clear that Prigozhin will stay in Russia’s friendly country Belarus. Moreover, Russia has also dropped the allegations against Prigozhin and the Wagner Group. Both sides claim to have taken this decision to avoid bloodshed.
The Ukraine conflict has reached a crucial stage, and in the meantime, the Wagner Group, a private military company, had directly challenged the Russian military. Prigozhin had expressed dissatisfaction with the way the Ukraine conflict was handled. In such a situation, Prigozhin announced to attack the capital Moscow directly to teach a lesson to the Russian Army Chief and Defence Minister on Saturday. Prigozhin had also announced to capture two Russian cities and gained control over the military headquarters therein. He further claimed they achieved it without spilling even a single drop of blood.
Furthermore, saying they were patriots, Prigozhin claimed their action was not a coup or an anti-national act. However, Russian President Putin sharply reacted by saying that Prigozhin had stabbed him in the back. In addition, the Russian President had also warned that they would strictly end this rebellion. Consequently, the media worldwide began discussing that a fierce struggle would start between the mercenaries of the Wagner Group and the Russian army. However, the situation changed on Sunday, and Prigozhin ordered his troops to return. Also, information has surfaced that Prigozhin will go to Belarus.
Moreover, Prigozhin claims that they took this decision to avoid bloodshed. Meanwhile, the Russian government has also dropped the treason charges against Prigozhin and the Wagner Group and has suspended action against them. Russia has clarified that, at times, it is necessary to avoid more bloodshed than to punish. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman of the Russian President, said that the soldiers of the Wagner Group in the Ukraine conflict who took part in the revolt would not be prosecuted.
Apart from this, the issue of Prigozhin’s rebellion and retreat within hours is being discussed worldwide. Prigozhin was in the hope that after his rebellion, the Russian army would react, and that would increase his strength. At the same time, Western media claim that Prigozhin backtracked after realising that the Russian military was standing loyally with President Putin. Some news agencies and analysts have also claimed that the conflict between Prigozhin and Putin will break out in the future though it did not begin this time. Besides, a news agency has also expressed apprehension that President Putin may get Prigozhin killed in Belarus.
