Moscow: Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev described Western countries as ‘crazy’ and said the continuous supply of weapons to Ukraine would bring the Third World War closer. Medvedev also indicated that no matter how many weapons the Western countries provide, Russia’s objectives will not change and will continue its campaign against Ukraine. The G7 bloc and other countries have assured Ukraine of sending huge arms assistance based on the NATO meeting that started in Lithuania. Given this, the warning of Medvedev has drawn much attention.
Over 500 days have passed since the Russia-Ukraine conflict started last year, and it has not been possible for any country to achieve decisive success in this battle. Claims are emerging that Ukraine has inflicted heavy losses on Russia, yet the past few months indicate that Russia’s defence capability has remained intact. On the contrary, Ukraine’s failure to break Russia’s defence despite receiving billions of dollars of advanced weapons from Western countries has been underlined.
Nevertheless, there is a steady supply of weapons to Ukraine by the US and NATO member countries. The United States has recently announced to provide ‘cluster bombs’ to Ukraine. Also, Germany has announced giving Ukraine additional ‘Patriot missiles’, and France said it would supply the ‘SCALP missiles’. Along with Poland, some countries have also provided fighter aircraft. The same testimony was given at the NATO meeting in Lithuania, that it will continue to supply arms to Ukraine until the end of the conflict and even after that.
Furthermore, Russia is repeatedly warning that the intensity and scope of the conflict will increase further due to the continuous arms assistance to Ukraine. However, western countries have ignored it. Because of this, Russia has started adopting an increasingly aggressive role and has threatened to use more advanced weapons. Former President Medvedev had also warned earlier that Russia may use nuclear weapons. He seems to be underlining the increasing dangers by mentioning the Third World War.
