Moscow: ‘If ballistic missiles are launched at Russia or its allies, it will be perceived as a nuclear attack. The action will receive a nuclear retaliation,’ warned the Russian military. Russia’s threat is believed to be directed towards the US. Also, such a response is said to be one of the critical points in the Russian nuclear deterrent policy, released in June.   

The Russian military officials have claimed the country had amended its nuclear policy for the first time. They were required to make the said changes given the amendments the US made to its nuclear policy as also the evolving events across the globe. In an article in the military newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star), senior military officials Maj. Gen. Andrei Sterlin and Col. Alexander Khryapin informed about the decision.   

Russia has made significant amendments to the nuclear policy. The country will now consider any ballistic missile strike as a nuclear attack and respond to it accordingly. ‘Any attacking missile will be perceived as carrying a nuclear warhead. The information about the missile launch will be automatically relayed to the Russian military-political leadership, which will determine the scope of retaliatory action by nuclear forces depending on the evolving situation,’ said a Russian military official.   

The Russian mouthpiece has clearly said that the country had issued a warning through its nuclear policy. ‘Along with the new nuclear policy, Russia has even drawn out ‘red lines’ for its adversaries. In the event that the red lines were crossed, Russian enemies would have to face severe consequences,’ the Russian military newspaper stated.
