Washington: President Donald Trump severely criticised China and said that it had taken the utmost advantage of the US and exploited their economy. So, if Beijing didn’t change its stance on Washington, the US would fully decouple with the Chinese economy. He added that the phase 1 trade deal the two countries had reached a while ago, did not hold any relevance now. At the same time, he asserted that China would own the US if Joe Biden won presidential elections.
Previously, in 2016, Trump said China had committed the greatest theft of all times and ripped them off. Trump also took his threat of taking up a trade war against China to fruition after taking over as president. His statements on decoupling with China economy are thus crucial.
After the Coronavirus outbreak, Trump has sharply ratcheted up China rhetoric taking up a stance of confrontation. Apart from Trump, senior US lawmakers are also consistently targeting China. The US Congress and significant departments have made several decisions that have delivered a blow to the Chinese Communist regime. Additionally, the US has incorporated many allied nations in its campaign against China. And the front is trying to corner the country over various issues such as the South China Sea, Hong Kong, Uyghurs and others. As President Trump reprimanded China over the handling of the Coronavirus pandemic, he has threatened to decouple with the Chinese economy twice wholly. By reiterating the remarks, the US President has indicated not having backed out of the option.
In an interview with news channel Fox News, Trump launched a scathing attack on China. President Trump said, ‘I don’t want to set the world on fire right now by making bold statements. There has been no country that has ripped us off more than China. Each year, we lose billions, hundreds of billions of dollars in trade with China. We get nothing from China in return. Yes, we get some goods that we could produce ourselves [but] we get nothing. All we do is lose money’.
Also, President Trump said that ‘The US had made a trade deal with China and even began exporting goods worth billions of dollars to the country. However, the situation has deteriorated after the outbreak of the Covid-19. The deal is no longer the same to me. If they don’t treat us right from now on and change their US policy, I would certainly completely decouple with the Chinese economy.’ Trump went on to say that China has begun to interfere in the US Presidential elections, which will be held in November this year. Moreover, he affirmed that the country was conspiring to get his opponent Joe Biden to win.
