Berlin: Russian and Chinese stockpile of hypersonic missiles could become a nightmare for the European nations. The German daily expressed concerns over the hypersonic missiles saying they had sparked a series of threats to European security. Russia has the S-500 air defence system, which can neutralise the missiles. So, the daily asserted that Russia is well secure even if other nations become armed with hypersonic weapons.
Ten days ago, Russia had announced testing four inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) from its nuclear submarine. Fired from the Pacific Ocean, the missiles accurately hit targets towards Russia’s northwest. The ICBM tests had flared off alerts on US military bases in Germany. German news outlet Die Welt has reported the story. Also, it sounded the alarm for potential future threats to the European nations.
The daily said, US radar systems can easily detect ICBMs, and therefore its military bases in Germany were alerted. However, it highlighted that when it comes to Russian hypersonic missiles, they are challenging to detect and counter. Further, it warned that Russia and China are armed with such hypersonic missiles.
The daily noted that ‘The hypersonic missiles have thus rendered air defence systems and anti-ballistic missile systems ineffective. Responding to attacks made with such missiles has become a challenge.’ Moreover, the daily asserted that such missiles posed a threat to other nations’ security and the US is on a backfoot compared to Russia and China in this regard. What’s more, the daily underscores that since such hypersonic missiles are hard to detect, there will be no meaning left to agreements between nations that ban their use.
