Jerusalem: Hamas rocket and missile attacks continue on Israel, killing two Thai nationals. So far, 160 Hamas militants have been killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza. Israel had opened its border with Gaza to provide humanitarian assistance to the locals there. However, after mortar attacks were made here as well, Israel closed the border. Also, Israel has accused Hamas of wanting conflict and not humanitarian aid.
In the past two days, the Israeli military has come under fire for its operation on Hamas’s underground network of tunnels and media building in Gaza. Israel has been accused of trying to silence the media by attacking the Al Jala building. On the other hand, Israel said Hamas was using the building housing press offices as a human shield and had evidence to prove it. Israel has handed over the evidence to the United States. Moreover, Israel explained that Palestinians were solely killed because Hamas was using them as human shields.
In the last seven days, Gaza’s Hamas and Islamic Jihad have launched more than 3,400 rocket and missile attacks on Israel. Israel’s Iron Dome, advanced air defence systems, intercepted 90% of them. However, 450 of the missiles did not make it across the Gaza border, the Israeli military said. The Iron Dome system has reduced the impact of the Hamas attacks significantly. Otherwise, thousands of Israeli civilians would have lost their lives due to the thousands of rockets that were hurled at Israel by terrorist organizations in Gaza, the Israeli military underscored.
Hamas has launchers that can fire four to nine rockets in a second. The Israeli military announced that it had destroyed 65 such launchers and anti-tank launchers in the past three days. On Tuesday, Israel destroyed another network of Hamas tunnels in Gaza. Hamas then launched heavy rocket attacks on Israel’s Beersheba, Dimona, Ofakim, Ashdod, Ashkelon and Tel Aviv. Besides, Hamas has threatened to attack Tel Aviv to avenge the killing of the Islamic Jihad commander.
The threat was followed by a rocket attack from Gaza on a plant near the Israeli border. As a result, Thai workers working on the plant were killed.
Israel had opened the Erez Crossing to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. But even as the aid was underway, mortar attacks erupted from Gaza. The Israeli army said one of its soldiers was wounded in it. “Hamas’s goal is to attack Israel. Hamas does not care if the Palestinian people receive humanitarian aid or not,” the Israeli military said as it launched stinging criticism.
Along with Gaza, rockets and explosive-laden drone strikes have also begun to hit Israel from the Lebanese and Syrian borders. Six rockets were fired from the Lebanese border on Tuesday morning. None of the rockets could enter the Israeli territory. Nevertheless, Israel took swift action and responded to the attacks. The Israeli military believes Palestinian groups in Lebanon may have carried out the attacks. On the other hand, drones were fired from Syria into northern Israel, but the Iron Dome system intercepted these.
Meanwhile, as Israel responds to attacks from Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, it is also facing riots within its borders. On Tuesday, riots were sparked in Jerusalem and various parts of the West Bank. In Hebron, a rioter tried to attack Israeli soldiers with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), a submachine gun and a knife. However, the police took timely action and arrested him. Furthermore, rioters opened fire on Israeli troops in the Bait Al area of Ramallah, injuring two. Also, hundreds of Palestinians are reported to have started riots against Jews in the Sheikh Zarah area of Jerusalem.
