Moscow: In a stern warning to its adversaries, the Russian President said, ‘Everyone wants to bite us somewhere or to bite off something from us. But they — those who are going to do it — should know that we will knock out their teeth so that they cannot bite. Rival countries are keeping an eye on Russia’s enormous size and natural resources. They are looking for ways to clip our wings as Russia becomes more powerful.’ The warning draws much attention as it comes amid growing tensions between Russia and the West over the past few months.
In World War II, Russia defeated the Nazi regime in Germany. The Victory Organizing Committee has been set up to honour Russian soldiers killed in the war. While speaking at the committee’s meeting, President Putin reminded his rivals of the Russian power. Putin also mentioned the statements of Russian Emperor Czar Alexander III. Putin said their Emperor had stated that ‘Everyone is afraid of Russia’s vastness.’ Also, he raised the alarm, saying that ‘Even after we lost a third of our potential when the former Soviet republics became independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia is still too big for some.’
It is the second time this month that President Putin warned Western nations that oppose Russia. Two weeks ago, a military parade was organised for commemorating Victory Day in capital Moscow. At the time, Putin had firmly asserted that Russia would not back down on any issue.
The tensions between Russia and the West have been escalating over the last few months. The United States imposed sanctions on Russia, claiming it was behind the cyberattacks in the country. At the same time, aggressive decisions were made over the action taken against Putin’s opponent Alexei Navalny, the Nord Stream pipeline project and Ukraine. In addition, the European countries have also taken a stance against Russia on the Navalny case and the Ukraine issue.
