Members of US Congress push State Department to declassify documents on Coronavirus’ relation to Wuhan Lab

Washington: The US Congress members wrote a letter to the US State Secretary Antony Blinken, demanding information about the Wuhan Laboratory. The letter states that ‘The Wuhan Lab of Virology (WIV) is the epicentre of examining the origin of Covid-19 and the possibility of a laboratory leak. The United States and the World Health Organisation (WHO) are also investigating this matter. In addition, the release of these documents from the department could help to refute contradictory statements that have been made regarding the possibility of a laboratory leak from the WIV.’

A few days ago, former US State Secretary and CIA Director Mike Pompeo stated that the Coronavirus originated from the Wuhan Laboratory. In his statement, he claimed that the situational evidence and the Chinese regime’s extensive attempts to suppress information about Wuhan Laboratory prove that the virus originated from the Wuhan Lab. The United States had published a fact sheet about the correlation of the Chinese military and Wuhan Lab and the information about the ongoing research in the Wuhan Lab when Pompeo was the Secretary of State.

Against this background, the letter written by the US Congress members to Secretary of State Blinken stands significant. This letter has been written by Morgan Griffith, a member of the Oversight and Investigations Committee, and other lawmakers. It has also been signed by the members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. In an interview last month, even US State Secretary Antony Blinken had said that it is essential to find the origins of Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, a petition has been filed against former US President Donald Trump. The Chinese Americans Civil Rights Coalition (CACRC) filed this petition. It claimed that he caused defamation to the community by mentioning Coronavirus as the Chinese Virus. During his term as US President, Donald Trump referred to Coronavirus as the ‘Chinese Virus‘, ‘Wuhan Virus’ and ‘Kung Flu’. The complaint mentioned that this induced a rise in violence among Chinese and other Asian civilians in the United States. Furthermore, it demands that Donald Trump pay a fine of $22.3 million.

Moreover, according to a sensational claim made by the WHO, the death toll due to Coronavirus can be two to three times higher than recorded. WHO’s Assistant Director-General Dr Samira Asma also said that apart from Coronavirus, this toll includes deaths caused directly due to the virus as even those resulting from its indirect effects. In 2020, over 3 million had died due to the virus, the WHO report stated.

A few days ago, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) report also mentioned that the current death toll due to Covid-19 is twice the number officially released.

Taiwan accuses China of spreading fake news about Coronavirus

Taipei: As the Covid-19 cases in Taiwan are rising, China’s using aggressive pressure tactics to create discontent among Taiwanese people, senior Taiwanese ministers accused. ‘The reason we are continuing to explain the contents of the fake information to everyone is to call attention to it. We must immediately intercept this and not let cognitive warfare affect Taiwan’s society,’ said Taiwan Deputy Minister of the Interior, Chen Tsung-yen. A few days ago, news reports suggested that the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, contracted the Coronavirus. However, the Taiwanese Minister had dismissed it, claiming it as fake news spread by China.
