China may take over Taiwan after the Winter Olympics, ex-US Ambassador Nikki Haley warns

Washington: Former US Ambassador to UN Nikki Haley issued a deadly warning ‘The last time the Olympics were held in China, it was an emerging country. However, this time, if the Winter Olympics in China go well, Beijing will use it to show that it has become a superpower. Mark my words that if it succeeds, China will not resist seizing Taiwan. Once China takes over Taiwan, its influence will not remain limited to the region. After that, China will also encroach territories of other countries,’ said Nikki Haley.

Nikki Haley is a former US ambassador to the United Nations and is currently active in US politics as an influential leader. The group called ‘Stand for America’, which she founded in 2019, discusses US policies. Excerpts from her interview with Stand for America have been released. Word has it that Nikki Haley may run for president in the 2024 elections. In such a scenario, Haley’s warning about China assumes much significance.

China is building its army and has the largest navy in the world. The country has state-of-the-art air defence systems and is rapidly taking steps to modernize its military. At the same time, the United States is not ready to pay much attention to the modernization of its defence forces. On the other hand, China is stealing the US’s intellectual property by violating laws pertaining to it. China is committing atrocities against Uyghur Muslims and even genocide. Haley highlighted China’s threat as she stated that she could not tolerate another genocide in silence.

‘Back when I was working as the US Ambassador to the United Nations, I would observe the Chinese delegation working quietly. Nevertheless, the situation changed as all the power in China was concentrated in the hands of President Xi Jinping. China started making manoeuvres to insert its men into key positions in important committees on the UN. China has gone so far as to threaten countries which do not vote in its favour at the UN,’ Haley noted.

Therefore, during his tenure, Donald Trump had imposed sanctions on China for stealing the United States intellectual property. If the current administration follows the practice, it will be beneficial for the US. The committee chaired by President Jinping has made it mandatory for companies doing business in their country to cooperate with the Chinese military. Even US technology companies are not exempt. During the wave of coronavirus in the US, PPE kits were manufactured by US companies ‘Three M’ and ‘Honeywell’, which are doing business in China. However, China did not allow the PPE kits and other materials to reach the US. China itself purchased an excessive number of PPE kits. Furthermore, China had made the decision to supply the PPE kits only to countries that agreed to its demands.

‘China is therefore coercing everyone, including the United States. I cannot sleep just thinking of such actions of China,’ Haley said as she underscored the seriousness of the situation. She drew attention towards the threat posed by China to US national security and economic interests and that it was assuming serious proportions. Haley’s warning to the US is turning into a severe concern for other countries as well. Leaders of Taiwan, Japan, and Australia are also drawing the international community’s attention towards the matter.
