Kabul: At least 150 Afghan soldiers have been killed in terrorist attacks launched by Taliban militants in Afghanistan in the past 24 hours, a senior Afghan government official informed. In addition, reports said the Taliban had consolidated power by taking control of two more districts. On the other hand, the Afghan Defence Ministry has announced that 126 Taliban militants were killed in military operations in 24 hours.
Taliban attacks in Afghanistan are on the rise. Taliban militants are targeting Afghan security forces. Currently, the Afghan army and the Taliban are engaged in clashes in 26 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces. The Afghan government is in control of 133 districts, while the Taliban controls 75 districts. Besides, the army and militants are also fighting for control over 189 districts.
The Afghan security forces were believed to have suffered heavy casualties in the conflict, although its details have not yet been disclosed. However, on Monday, an Afghan government official released essential information on the condition of anonymity. At least 150 Afghan soldiers have been killed in the clashes in the past 24 hours. It is unclear as to which province or district the Afghan army suffered such heavy casualties.
The Taliban have also taken control of two districts in the last 24 hours. The Taliban captured Kaisar district in Faryab province on Sunday and Shahrak district in Ghor province on Monday morning. The Taliban is believed to currently control 19 per cent of Afghanistan, while the Afghan government 47 per cent of the country. Taliban’s attacks have intensified after the withdrawal of the US and NATO troops from Afghanistan began.
The Afghan army claims it has achieved great success against the Taliban. According to the Afghan Defence Ministry, 126 Taliban militants have been killed and 79 wounded in military operations across 15 provinces in the past 24 hours. The ministry said the operations were carried out in Nangarhar, Khost, Maidan Wardak, Logar, Paktia, Ghazni, Uruzgan, Badghis, Faryab, Baghlan, Kunduz and Helmand provinces.
Meanwhile, as the conflict in Afghanistan escalates, the Taliban released a statement on Monday. In the report, the Taliban said, “Afghans who have been assisting the US and NATO forces as interpreters, porters or spies in the conflict in Afghanistan for the last 20 years will not be harmed. Such citizens do not need to leave the country. They should only show remorse for their past deeds before the Taliban.’ The Taliban’s announcement is believed a warning to Afghans. Moreover, the threat is said to indicate a return of Taliban rule in Afghanistan.
