Washington: The Pentagon issued a severe warning through a report. ‘The whole world is moving closer to nuclear war. A nuclear war could spark off between the United States and Russia, China, North Korea and Iran,’ the Pentagon stated. The day after the report was released, a US ambassador expressed concern over China’s new nuclear technology at the Conference on Disarmament. The US ambassador warned that China’s ongoing moves to make its navy and air force nuclear-capable threaten stability.
The Pentagon released a 67-page report last week. The report titled the ‘Joint Nuclear Operations’ was prepared by the Federation of American Scientists. It warned that the threat of a nuclear war between the United States and its enemies, Russia, China, North Korea and Iran, has increasingly strengthened. Besides, it mentions that Russia and China have upgraded their nuclear arsenals as even stepped up their numbers over the past decade.
‘Over a decade, the United States has sought to reduce the number and capabilities of nuclear weapons possessed by all the four countries. However, the enemy nations began moving in the opposite direction, increasing the number of nuclear weapons they had and continuing their upgradation. Therefore, the possibility of a conflict breaking out with these nuclear-armed enemies in different parts of the world, which could trigger a nuclear war, has highly increased,’ the report stated. The report went on to claim that Russia and China posed the biggest threat to the United States.
The United States has sought to limit nuclear weapons by signing the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with Russia. Nevertheless, Russia upgraded its nuclear arsenal despite the deal. Even China, which competes with the US military capabilities, has upgraded its nuclear arsenal, the report said.
US Ambassador Robert Wood expressed concern over China’s nuclear preparations at the Conference on Disarmament in Switzerland. Wood claimed that China is developing nuclear-powered underwater drones or cruise missiles, which can be integrated into fighter jets. ‘Strategic stability will be threatened if China succeeds in its plans. The United States also does not have such nuclear technology,’ Wood said as he shed light over the matter at the Geneva Conference.
Meanwhile, US officials and military analysts have previously warned of the dangers of a nuclear war. However, with the warning in the Pentagon report that states a nuclear war could erupt between the United States and Russia, China, North Korea and Iran, the gravity of the situation has increased.
