After anti-govt protests, Cuba alleges US stance hints at military intervention

Havana/Washington: ‘The statements from US President Joe Biden and his administration since the protests last week hint at a military intervention,’ a senior Cuban military official alleged. Only a few days ago, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel claimed that an international conspiracy was at play behind presenting Cuba as unstable and dangerous. Widespread protests were held in Cuba last week against the ruling Communist regime. These are believed the largest demonstrations ever held against the ruling government.

protestsUS President Joe Biden had supported the widespread protests in Cuba. The demonstrations are an outcry of the Cuban people, and the government should lend an ear instead of trying to suppress them, Biden said in response to the protests. Several members of the US Congress have backed the anti-government protests in Cuba, demanding an intervention. Cuban-American citizen groups have issued a severe warning that said there would be bloodshed if the Biden administration does not intervene. However, Russia and Latin America have warned that foreign intervention in Cuba would not be tolerated.

The Cuban government launched fresh criticism against the US in light of the events. Johana Tablada, a senior official for US affairs at Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accused the US of mispresenting Cuba’s situation. ‘There is a Walt Disney narrative of a bad government and people fighting for their freedom — stereotypes that scare anyone who has never set foot in Cuba because of their arrogance and disregard for the truth,’ Tablada criticised.

protests‘As of now, the US has not initiated any movements for a military operation against Cuba. However, the US administration is taking an extreme stand, which indicates military confrontation. Previously, the US had taken a similar stance before a military intervention in Libya and Iraq. Senior US officials are consistently making wrong statements against Cuba since protests on July 11,’ Johana Tablada accused.

The Biden Administration had maintained the sanctions imposed in the past against the Cuban government. At the same time, efforts are underway to make the internet available to the Cuban people. Also, US restrictions on remittances to Cuba from the Cuban community in America may likely be eased. The Republican Party in the United States has accused that Biden has a weak policy on Cuba, underscoring that the US Democratic Party is backing the Cuban Communist regime.

After the 1959 Cuban revolution, the Communist Party came to power under Fidel Castro. The United States attempted to overthrow the Castro government several times but in vain. Furthermore, the US also imposed comprehensive economic sanctions against Cuba. In 2015, then US present Barack Obama had decided to lift sanctions on Cuba to a certain extent. However, Cuba was enlisted as a terror-sponsoring regime during Donald Trump’s tenure with the imposition of new sanctions.
