Washington – The proposed ‘Nine Eyes Alliance’ plan has been introduced in the US’ Defense Bill’ to prevent the actions of China and Russia. Ruben Gallego, a member of the House Armed Services Committee in the US Congress, proposed an amendment. The amendment demands the introduction of information about the benefits and risks of expanding the scope of the Five Eyes, a group of intelligence-sharing agencies, before May 2022. Earlier, an intelligence subcommittee in the US Congress had made such a recommendation.

Besides, the US and UK intelligence agencies had signed a pact to increase mutual cooperation against the backdrop of World War II. Later on, Canada, Australia and New Zealand were included in the lead. Steps were taken to strengthen the lead between the US and Russia during the Cold War. The scope of movements of Five Eyes became limited, though it continued to operate even after the end of the Cold War. Whereas now, efforts are underway to expand it to counter-respond to the ongoing activities by the China-Russia front.

‘The committee acknowledges that the threat landscape has vastly changed since the inception of the Five Eyes arrangement, with primary threats now emanating from China and Russia. The committee believes that, in confronting great power competition, the Five Eye countries must work closer together, as well as expand the circle of trust to other like-minded democracies,’ said the House Armed Services Committee of the US Congress.

Gallego has proposed an amendment to the US Defense Bill. He backed the amendment while announcing the proposal and said that the ‘Five Eyes intelligence-sharing pact is a World War II relic that needs updating to better keep tabs on China’. The amendment demands to have the US Intelligence Agencies Chief and Secretary of Defense submit a report before May 2022 in this regard. There are indications that the expansion of Five Eyes would include India, Japan, South Korea and Germany. These countries have also been mentioned in the amendment of the Defense Bill.

Over the past decade, it has appeared that the expansionist activities of China’s communist regime are being consistently intensified. The Chinese regime has formed a front with Russia, which is emerging as a new threat. The US has taken the initiative to curb its growing activities, and efforts are underway to bring the various allies together. The expansion of the ‘Five Eyes’ is part of this. Moreover, this will further transform to ‘Nine Eyes’ after the inclusion of four new countries.
