Moscow – Russian President Vladimir Putin has sternly warned that the Russian security-related interests will never be compromised after the two autonomous parts of eastern Ukraine are imparted status of independent countries. Putin issued this warning with the backdrop of the Defender of the Fatherland Day, celebrated in Russia on Wednesday. Russia has guaranteed the security and sovereignty of the new countries, Donetsk and Luhansk, before the President’s warning, declared Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
On Monday night, Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced that parts of Donetsk and Luhansk, which are part of Ukraine, were recognised as independent countries. Thereon, strong reactions have been provoked from Western countries, including Ukraine. The US and its allies have begun yelling that military sent by Russia after the said declaration is in itself an invasion of Ukraine. Putin has said that there will be no compromise on Russia’s security while responding to the Western allegations.
Moreover, Defender of the Fatherland Day is celebrated in Russia to commemorate the contribution of Russian troops in World War I. In his speech addressed to the people of the nation at the occasion, Putin expressed complete confidence in the capabilities of the Russian Defence Forces. He said that Russia’s defence forces are firm guarantors of the country’s security. Therefore, maintaining the country’s defence capability is the top priority. He further said, ‘Our country is always open for direct and honest dialogue, for the search for diplomatic solutions to the most complex problems.’ But he added, ‘The interests of Russia, the security of our citizens, are non-negotiable for us.’
Ahead of Putin’s warning, Foreign Minister Lavrov clarified Russia’s position on the two newly recognised countries. Russia has reached agreements with new countries on friendship, cooperation and assistance, said Lavrov. Russia has accepted the responsibility of their security through these agreements. He added that everyone should be aware of it. Russia has deployed peacekeepers in Donetsk and Luhansk and has hinted at setting up defence bases if necessary. The Ukrainian government has announced a state of emergency in the country in the wake of Russia’s movements and has begun preparing to activate a reserve force.
