Nuclear-ready nations, China and Russia, pose a challenge to United States

Washington / Beijing – ‘Today, we face two nuclear-capable near-peers who can unilaterally escalate to any level of violence in any domain worldwide with any instrument of national power at any time. We have never faced a situation before like that in our history,’ warned Admiral Charles A. Richard, chief of US Strategic Command, regarding a growing nuclear threat from China and Russia.

अण्वस्त्रसज्जCurrently, the US House of Representatives is hearing on defence policy and spending issues. At this time, the chief of the US Strategic Command and the Space Command mentioned the challenges posed by the increasing cooperation between Russia and China. ‘I’m worried about what cooperative aggression looks like. We do not know the endpoints of where either of those other two are going either in capability or capacity,’ warned Adm. Charles, chief of the Strategic Command.

Earlier, the United States needed to plan a strategy considering Russia’s nuclear preparedness. However, now steps will have to be taken with three-party stability in mind, Adm. Charles A. Richard drew attention. In his hearing, the chief of the Strategic Command also raised the issue of the modernisation of the US nuclear triad. Swift steps have to be taken for modifying the nuclear triad, considering the increasing threat of China and Russia, Adm. Richard appealed.

अण्वस्त्रसज्जGeneral James Dickinson, the chief of the US space command, expressed concern over the space leap by China and Russia and the growing cooperation between them. He also claimed that the space sector is no more a safe haven for the United States. China has refused to participate in the efforts of the United States and Russia to restrict the number of nuclear weapons. The US and Russia currently have 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons. If they reduced their nuclear stockpiles as much as China, China would participate in the nuclear reduction negotiations, is China’s stance. As per the reports released by international think tanks in the US and Europe last year, China is said to have 350 nuclear weapons. However, by the end of this decade, China will take its nuclear stockpile to 1,000 are the claims made, with experts saying that rapid preparations are in progress.
