New phase of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine has begun

Moscow / Kyiv – Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov informed the beginning of a new phase of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. Russia has launched simultaneous widespread attacks in all parts of eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also called the Battle of Donbas a decisive battle. Meanwhile, Russia’s deadline for a Ukrainian military unit to take refuge in a factory in Mariupol has expired. After that, there have been indications that Russia is preparing for limited action.

Part of the provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine is known as Donbas. Once rich in coal and iron ore mines, the area has a vast population of citizens of Russian descent. In the 2014 conflict, pro-Russian groups had seized one-third of the total area. Before taking action against Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin had accused the Ukrainian government of perpetrating genocide in the region. Therefore, gaining control over the region is considered a decisive stage in Russia’s campaign in Ukraine.

On Monday, Russian forces have begun attacks on about a 500-kilometre-long front in Donbas. Nearly 70 battalions of the Russian army have participated in the operation, and heavy attacks have been launched with the help of missiles, artillery, tanks, rockets and mortars. According to Russian sources, storming attacks were launched on more than a thousand Ukrainian military locations in the last 24 hours. These include military units, defence forces outposts, arsenals, fuel depots, and armed vehicles.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Lavrov informed us that Russia’s campaign had begun a new phase. ‘Another stage of this operation (in eastern Ukraine) is beginning, and I am sure this will be an important moment of this special operation. The plan to liberate the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics is being methodically carried out,’ Lavrov informed about the new action. Ukrainian President Zelensky also drew attention to Russia‘s new attacks. The Russian military has launched the ‘Battle of Donbas’ and has been preparing for it for a long time, Zelensky has said.

While the Battle of Donbas began in eastern Ukraine, the UK and the Netherlands, along with the US, announced an ample arms supply to Ukraine.

Moreover, the United States has announced to train Ukrainian military units. The UK has decided to send new missiles and missile launchers to Ukraine. Besides, the government of the Netherlands has announced to send heavy weapons. A few days ago, Germany signalled that it would supply weaponry worth $1 billion to Ukraine.
