After a retreat in Ukraine, President Putin may use nuclear weapons, ex-US military officer warns

Washington/Moscow/Kyiv – Former US military officer Brigadier General Kevin Ryan made a startling warning that President Vladimir Putin may decide to launch a nuclear attack under pressure as Russia retreats in Ukraine. Former NATO Deputy Chief Rose Gottemoeller has also confirmed this. Gottemoeller warned that Russia might opt for a nuclear strike to force Ukraine to surrender after the blow it delivered. Meanwhile, after Kharkiv, Ukrainian forces launched fierce attacks in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces in southern Ukraine, and it has been claimed that the Russian troops are withdrawing from Melitopol city in Zaporizhzhia province.

Over the past few days, Ukrainian forces are said to have achieved major tactical success in the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine. Ukrainian leaders reported that their troops had captured some important cities, including the town of Izium, and that they had reached a few kilometres from the Russian border. Also, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed to have recaptured 8,000 square kilometres of territory in northeastern and southern Ukraine. On Wednesday, Zelensky is said to have visited the city of Izium, which was captured by Ukrainian forces.

After the success in Kharkiv, the Ukrainian army is said to have shifted its front to the Donbas region. Ukraine has launched attacks on Russian-held areas of Donbas. At the same time, the Ukrainian forces have once again increased the intensity of counter-attacks in southern Ukraine’s Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Claims are being made of the Ukrainian army slowly taking over areas and demoralizing the Russian army. Russian troops are reportedly withdrawing from the key town of Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia.

In the background of the advance of the Ukrainian army and the retreat of Russia, alarms have been raised over the increased possibility of Russian President Putin using the “nuclear option”. Brigadier General Kevin Ryan, formerly a defense attache at the US Embassy in Russia, issued a severe warning about this. “There is increasing pressure on Putin to take some dramatic or decisive step. In such a situation, there is a possibility of him choosing the option of a nuclear strike’,” said Ryan as he drew attention to the possibility of a nuclear attack.

‘Russia may take steps to annex Donetsk and Luhansk regions. If this happens, it will create a picture that the current conflict is going on within the Russian territory. Since NATO weapons are being used in this area, it can be claimed that NATO has crossed the red lines by showing that Russia is under attack. This may lead to the use of nuclear weapons,’ warned former US military officers.
