Putin declares martial law in four Ukrainian provinces controlled by Russia

Moscow/Kyiv: President Vladimir Putin has declared martial law in four regions of Ukraine controlled by Russia. This decision was taken at Russia’s Security Council meeting. As martial law is being placed in these Ukrainian regions, certain restrictions have also been imposed in the eight Russian areas bordering Ukraine. At the same time, thousands of citizens are being relocated in the wake of intense conflict in Kherson province.

In the past few days, heavy missile and drone attacks have been going on from Russia in various regions of Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv. These attacks have destroyed the electricity and water supply systems in Ukraine. The series of strikes launched by Russia last week has not stopped yet, with missiles and drones being fired on Wednesday. Areas in central and northern Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, were targeted. The Ukrainian leadership has acknowledged that Ukraine suffered significant damage in these attacks.

As Russia continues to launch attacks, President Putin held a Security Council meeting on Wednesday. In this meeting, he announced martial law implementation in four Ukraine regions under Russian control. As it is necessary to bring all four areas of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia under the framework of Russian law, it has been decided to implement martial law in these areas. The Russian President explained that this decision would come into effect from Thursday, October 20.

Analysts are claiming that after the implementation of martial law, the Russian army and security forces will be able to tighten their grip on the area. It has also hinted at imposing restrictions on the movement of people in the province. Apart from Luhansk, Ukraine controls parts of other provinces and its forces are engaged in launching retaliatory strikes.

These counter-attacks have intensified in Kherson province, and the Russian authorities have also acknowledged it. As the attacks escalated, an operation was undertaken to evacuate around 60,000 citizens of Kherson. The Ukrainian authorities have accused the Russian authorities of oppressing the citizens of Kherson.

Meanwhile, Russian forces are claimed to have succeeded in capturing new areas in Donetsk and Kharkiv provinces. Last month, the Russian army had to withdraw entirely from Kharkiv. However, even after the retreat, Russia continued its attacks in this area. Russia is said to have captured a village on the Kharkiv border on Tuesday. On the other hand, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Russian forces have advanced towards Soledar in the Donbas region.
