50% of Donetsk region is under Russian control

Moscow/Kyiv: Russian officials claim that Russia has taken control of 50 per cent of the Donetsk region, considered one of Ukraine’s frontline regions. Donetsk is part of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine; Russia has already taken control of the Luhansk region in Donbas. There is a fierce battle for control of strategic positions in the Donetsk region, and Russia is said to be besieging a town called Marinka. Meanwhile, it has come to light that Ukraine has destroyed an important bridge in Melitopol, Zaporizhzhia province, which is expected to disrupt the transport and supply chain between Kherson and Crimea.  

Donetsk regionThere is currently a fierce conflict between the forces of Russia and Ukraine, and the Donbas region seems to be at the centre of this conflict. Russian forces are carrying out crushing attacks to gain control of strategic positions in the Donetsk region. In the last 48 hours, Russia informed that nearly 150 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in a Russian attack. At the same time, Russia has gained control of the important highway connecting Donetsk and Luhansk and has succeeded in besieging the two cities of Bakhmut and Marinka.  

Denis Pushilin, the Russian politician and head of the Donetsk region, reported that more than 50 per cent of the region is under Russian control. On the other hand, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov claimed that the Russian Army is forcing the Ukrainian forces to retreat gradually in phases.  

Russia is using artillery and rockets to hit the two cities of Bakhmut and Avdiivka. Russia has entered the town of Marinka and said a fierce battle is going on for control of the city.  

Donetsk region

On the other hand, Ukraine has continued its offensive against the Russian-controlled areas of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. The city of Melitopol has been continuously targeted for the last few days. Last week, there was an attack on the Russian Army’s barracks in this city. After that, Ukraine is said to have succeeded in destroying an important bridge in the town. Photographs of the bridge have been released. The bridge has been heavily damaged. Besides, this bridge is considered important for transportation between the two provinces of Kherson and Crimea. The attack on the bridge has sparked strong reactions on Russian social media.  

Meanwhile, the West has signalled new military and financial aid to Ukraine. European countries have promised Ukraine financial assistance of almost two billion euros, while the United States has assured to take quick steps to provide air defence systems to Ukraine. Furthermore, the media reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his US counterpart Joe Biden had discussed the matter.
