Moscow/Kyiv: Ukraine’s counteroffensive to regain Russian-held territory in the Donbas region appears to have failed. In the last 48 hours, two major Ukrainian attacks have been thwarted, where more than 200 Ukrainian soldiers were killed. The Russian authorities reported it in the Donbas region. The latest information shows that Russia has focused its attention on the Donbas region in the last few days, and it is receiving success. Along with Donbas, Ukraine also said that Russia fired artillery guns and rockets in the southern and northern parts of Ukraine.
After the start of the military campaign in Ukraine, the Russian forces took full control of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine, as well as the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine. The capture of Luhansk is considered the most important milestone in the Russian campaign. After October, the Ukrainian army intensified its counteroffensive campaign and began attacking the Russian fronts in Luhansk. After initial success in this area, Ukraine failed to make bigger gains. However, in the last few days, Ukraine was claimed to have deployed new military units and weapons on the Luhansk front.
Since last week, Ukraine has started attacking the Russian fronts in the Luhansk region. They include Novolyubopvka, Nevsky, Makeyevka, Svyatovo, and Kreminaya. Russian fronts in this area are repeatedly targeted with rockets, mortars and artillery guns. However, the local armed forces and Russian forces in Luhansk responded befittingly to these attacks. The local authorities informed that more than 170 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in these attacks in Luhansk. Russia also reported that it successfully thwarted Ukraine’s attacks in Donetsk and Luhansk. Military officials in Donetsk say more than 15 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in attacks near Donetsk. Officials informed that tanks, artillery guns and armoured vehicles of the Ukrainian Army were destroyed in this attack.
Along with Donbas, Russia has continued its offensive in northern and southern Ukraine. Russia fired rockets at the city of Kharkiv, north of Ukraine. In southern Ukraine, Kherson and Oleshki cities were heavily attacked. Besides, Ukrainian authorities reported that 50 attacks occurred in Kherson and nearby areas in 24 hours. In Kherson, as many as 23 attacks targeted infrastructure. Due to the continuous attacks on Kherson, it has come to light that the citizens are leaving the city in large numbers.
Just last month, Ukrainian forces had promised that everything would be fine soon when they took control of Kherson. However, since then, Russia has launched more intense attacks on this city, and the citizens have no choice but to leave the city, claimed the local authorities.
Meanwhile, Sergei Kiriyenko, a close aide of Russian President Vladimir Putin, visited a nuclear plant in Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine and the international community are constantly questioning the security of this project. Therefore, Kiriyenko’s visit becomes noteworthy.
