Moscow/Kyiv: Russian forces fired missiles into Ukraine for the second successive day. At least 20 people are said to have been killed in attacks in Cherkasy and Dnipro regions, including the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. It has come to light that these attacks took place on Thursday night and Friday morning. Before that, Russia launched missile attacks in southern Ukraine’s Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
On Thursday night and Friday, the Russian military targeted the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, the Chekarsi region to its south, and the Dnipro region in central Ukraine. Russia also fired missiles into these areas from fighter jets stationed in the Caspian Sea region. Ukrainian authorities have informed that Russia used 23 missiles and two suicide drones for the attack. According to the Ukrainian military, Russia hit the “reserve force units” of the Ukrainian Army.
Ukraine said its air defence systems responded to some of the missiles fired in Russian attacks. Ukrainian authorities claimed the attacks occurred in civilian areas in Kyiv and the two other provinces. At least 20 people have been killed in the attacks. Ukraine said the victims included women, among other civilians. A severe reaction emerged from Ukraine in response. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, retorted saying Russia’s attacks are a response to peace proposals.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov claimed that preparations for a counteroffensive against Russia are almost complete in the wake of Russia’s missile attacks. Ukraine’s defence minister also said the tanks that Ukraine received from Germany and the UK would be part of the counteroffensive campaign. Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, has informed that NATO members and partner countries have trained nearly 30,000 soldiers in Ukraine.
Although Western countries claim to have provided major assistance to Ukraine, some countries are expressing doubts about Ukraine’s counteroffensive campaign at the same time. Sources in US military and diplomatic circles have begun to indicate that success for Ukraine will be limited. At the same time, it has been claimed that steps are also being taken to send military units to Ukraine through NATO member countries if the Ukrainian campaign is a complete failure.
On the other hand, increasing aggression from Russia has become a matter of concern for the West. Western officials say Russia is deploying more troops in its areas than last February. In the year that followed the sparking of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ukraine, Western media, and organizations claimed the Russian military suffered huge losses and its weapons stockpiles were greatly reduced. However, the intensifying Russian attacks demonstrate a contrasting picture.
