United Nations: Countries on the west coast of the African continent are currently facing severe terrorist attacks. During the first six months of this year, more than 1,800 terrorist attacks occurred in these countries and killed over 4,600 people. These countries are facing a grave humanitarian crisis due to these increasing terrorist attacks, warned a senior UN official. At the same time, he indicated that these attacks in West Africa are a glimpse of the increasingly dangerous effect of insecurity.
Moreover, about half a million people have become refugees in 15 countries in West Africa, and about 6.2 million people have been displaced in these countries. Oumar Touré drew attention to the fact that the number of people facing hunger in the region will increase from 30 million to 42 million in a few months if the international community ignores this massive and dire development.
Toure, president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) organisation, has drawn attention to the hunger crisis and terrorism. Furthermore, Touré claimed that terrorism, armed insurgency, organised crime, illegal changes in government, maritime smuggling, environmental crises and fake news are responsible for the growing insecurity in West Africa. Touré alleged that the rise of military regimes in three countries, namely Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea, among other countries in West Africa, is inviting terrorist attacks.
Furthermore, terrorist attacks killed 4,593 people in West African countries from January to June 2023. Of these, 2,725 were killed in attacks in Burkina Faso and 844 in attacks in Mali. Apart from this, 77 people have been killed in attacks in Niger and 70 in Nigeria. Toure has mentioned the countries Benin and Togo and cited how the attacks have affected neighbouring African countries with democratic systems.
