Ankara/Athens: Turkish President Recep Erdogan announced that ‘The sacrifice Turkey has made for the refugees and immigrants is now over. Henceforth, Turkey will not give asylum to them anymore. In the last few hours, hundreds of thousands of immigrants have run into European borders, and Europe should remain prepared for millions of them.’ Greece and Hungary have refused to accept any more immigrants and closed their borders. After that, the Turkish President threatened the European countries by making the announcement.
On Saturday, Turkey sent an influx of immigrants towards the European countries. The European Union (EU) has criticised the move, whereas Greece, Hungary, Macedonia and France have closed their borders for the immigrants. Also, Turkish President Erdogan claimed that some of the European countries were in touch with him. On Monday, he went on to state that the European leaders were requesting him over the phone to close the Turkish border and stop the immigrants.
Erdogan, however, said that discussing the action against the Assad regime in Syria was more crucial than the immigrant issue. ‘I will be meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Bulgarian Prime Minister, during a meeting with five nations where the topic will be discussed. Nevertheless, Turkey will continue to release the immigrant influx into Europe. Therefore, if our demands are not met, millions of immigrants will dash against the European borders’, Erdogan threatened.
Before Erdogan’s announcement, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis convened a meeting of the national security council and announced increasing the patrol on the borders. He also issued instructions to ensure not a single immigrant entered Greece. Furthermore, the Greek Prime Minister warned that the immigrants illegally approaching the Greek limits or the marine region, will be sent back.
After Greece, even Hungary has followed suit and closed its borders for the immigrants announcing that ‘No applications or complaints of the immigrants will be entertained’. Hungary’s security agencies clarified that the decision came because of the perceived threat of the Novel Coronavirus. ‘The immigrants may even include Iranian nationals. Coronavirus is spreading rapidly outside China in Iran, and the decision of closing the borders for immigrants was taken as a precautionary measure’, a senior Hungarian official informed.
