Kabul: Head of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) General Frank McKenzie has warned that ‘Taliban attacks in Afghanistan are rising. After the troop withdrawal of US and NATO forces is complete, the terrorist attacks here will intensify. Al Qaeda’s network will become stronger in Afghanistan, and the threat to US security from the terrorist group here will increase substantially.’ The US Defense Headquarters, Pentagon, has also warned the Biden administration about Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Even if one denies it, the Taliban’s cooperation with Al Qaeda continues, and the two groups will soon carry out deadly attacks in Afghanistan, US intelligence agency warned.
Reports indicate the United States and NATO have accelerated their troop withdrawals from Afghanistan. However, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby clearly stated on Monday that the United States would not turn its back on Afghanistan even if it withdrew its troops. Kirby said military bases in the Middle Eastern countries falling under CENTCOM’s jurisdiction had a heavy military presence. Besides, the United States could always use its military deployments in the Middle East to conduct operations in Afghanistan despite its withdrawal, Kirby suggested.
In an interview with a US news channel, Gen McKinzie warned that it would become difficult for the US to monitor the terrorist activities and attack them after a complete withdrawal from Afghanistan. Also, the general underscored that it could take four to six hours for a plane stationed at a military base in the Middle East to reach Afghanistan.
“Over the past few years, US operations in Afghanistan have caused significant damages to both Al Qaeda and IS-Khorasan. But after the US withdrawal, Al Qaeda terrorists will take advantage of the void created in Afghanistan to rebuild their bases. We cannot estimate whether it would happen in the next month or the next six months. In the near future, however, Al Qaeda will grow its influence in Afghanistan. If that happens, it will be a greater threat to US security,’ Gen McKenzie warned.
A few days ago, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) of the US Department of Defense also said the Taliban and Al Qaeda groups had an understanding and were still collaborating. Also, the agency said the two militant groups would continue to attack the Afghan people and security forces after the US military withdraws its troops from Afghanistan as it did previously.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zia Siraj, head of Afghanistan’s intelligence agency ‘the National Directorate of Security’ (NDS), is also drawing the world’s attention to the growing Taliban attacks. In less than five months, the Taliban have launched more than 3,500 attacks in Afghanistan. ‘The attacks have intensified in the past few weeks. The Taliban stepped up its attacks in Baghlan, Helmand, Kandahar, Kunduz and Laghman provinces,’ Siraj said.
